2025 Biography: My family moved to Manhattan in late summer of 1964; our rental house wasn’t ready yet so we camped at Tuttle Creek during the first couple of weeks of 7th grade. Which got me in some trouble when one of the MJHS teachers asked me where I lived, and I told them it was in a tent. I got a lot of laughs from the class, but the teacher thought I was being smart. Actually I am pretty smart according to standardized tests, but I’m sure that’s not what the teacher meant. It was a tough time for me, because I had just left all of my grade school friends up in Fargo North Dakota, and I didn’t know anyone in Manhattan. But one thing I’ve learned about Manhattan over the years is that it is a friendly and welcoming community, and a great place to grow up.
All of us that got to spend our childhood here are lucky; it gave us a good base for our lives as adults. We learned the Midwestern values of honesty and hard work, and how important it is to do the right thing. I’ve been double lucky because I’ve been able to call Manhattan home for almost all of my adult life. I met and married my Manhattanite wife of 50 years here, raised three MHS graduates, and was able to wrangle a couple of degrees from Kansas State. Almost all of my career kept me in Manhattan, and I followed up this 38 year career in the building design and construction world with a part time position teaching on campus for eight years. It’s all good.
My Mom told me early on in life that I was a bad liar, so I abandoned that tactic as a way of dealing with what life throws at you. And as the oldest of five kids, many times I had to do things the hard way and my siblings benefitted from my mistakes. All part of the process. What I’ve learned from almost 73 years on the planet is that three things have guided me: work hard, be honest, and always do what is right. But just as important is to mix in a little humor along the way. Laughter makes the message a little easier to swallow if it’s not all good.
Didn’t intend to ramble on after the first paragraph, but I did. I’m sure all of you have similar stories to tell, and I encourage you to share your wisdom with others. That’s the big advantage of getting to our age; we do have something worthwhile to pass on to the younger ones. Take care of yourselves.

Kathy Hayes
Dallas, TX
Children: Andrew Slottje, Morgan Slottje
2010 Biography: Written December 2009 about the year 2009: Last spring is a blur. Morgan applied to several boarding schools in the Northeast and got into Choate (JFK went there), their rival Deerfield and Taft. After a whirlwind visit to each, Morgan settled on Deerfield Academy (DA). Then, Morgan was accepted into two summer programs to study medicine. Morgan was invited to spend two weeks in DC / University of Maryland with the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. She decided there that orthopedic surgery was her passion. She then spent four weeks at University of Pennsylvania in their biomedical research program. I don?t think she has ever worked so hard (but it was a nice introduction to her workload at DA). She is planning a medical career.
She left for DA in September. I bought a GPS that more or less gets me through the back country roads of western MA. Morgan is in a tiny house with 13 girls, two seniors that are proctors and the rest juniors (as is Morgan). There is also a dorm mom, dad and two little sisters that live on the first floor. Her room is about half the size of Andrew's room last year at Princeton (which tells me that money doesn?t buy real estate). She loves DA and has made lots of friends and grown up so much.
Andrew and I went to Fez, Morocco last January. We stayed in the old city. Every day we were woken by roosters. Daily, we had numerous encounters with many livestock species (and their leftovers). Finishing his first year at Princeton, he left for Kyoto, Japan early in the summer to start and finish fourth year Japanese. He came home to Dallas for two days and left for an internship in London. During his six week appointment in London, I was able to spend a few days with him. We saw several plays including As You Like It at the Globe. He is now looking forward ??? to finals at Princeton in a couple of weeks. He is currently a math major.
I survived being chair of the Sociology Department. My appointment ended August 15, 2009. I taught two classes of Public Sector economics this past semester. This class explores public sector spending, including theory and application. This was my first real teaching responsibility in over a decade. (yep I finally gave up being a Dean) It took a few days before I realized that these students were just a bit older than Andrew and I needed to adjust the jokes.
My research has been slow to get restarted. I may be appointed to a task force on public education in Texas. I have been asked to present a research paper in New Zealand during their summer!!

Professionally I am working as a Nurse Practitioner in an Allergy and Asthma Clinic and Research Center, with two offices, one in Colorado Springs and the other in Pueblo (40 miles South). Days are busy, but rewarding.
My girls continue to bring me the greatest joys. Brianne, my oldest, got married last summer in Maui, HI. The week was filled with great family fun and at last....I have a son (in-law). They are both employed in public relations firms in Washington, DC and enjoy life in the fast lane. Gloyd Johnson
Kokomo, IN
2015 Biography: After graduation I left Manhattan for active duty in the Navy. Following several years of training I ended up stationed on a nuclear attack submarine out of Groton, CT. I served eight years shore tour on Recruiting duty in Missouri, and then I returned to civilian life. After a brief stay in Wisconsin, I ended up in Kokomo, IN working in various positions at Grissom AFB/ARB. From 1993-2003 I worked part time as an investment representative for a local investment company.
In 1999 I retired Navy Reserve as Senior Chief with 28yrs total service and retired from finance at Grissom ARB civil service with 25yrs. Lately I have been doing some SPACE A travel on military aircraft with a trip to Travis AFB CA then to San Antonio TX in Sept 2014 and plan to make a trip to Rota Spain in Oct. 2015 after USS Archerfish ship reunion.
Since I never had a family I felt God’s call to serve in children ministry at church working in nursery and preschool class. I volunteer at a preschool twice a week which has been a learning experience and a joy! Some of my other activities include photography and genealogy. Cross-country motor cycle riding led me on trip along route 66 to Santa Monica, CA a few years ago. I have performed in a couple local civic theatre musicals: Pirates of Penzance and Bye Bye Birdie. Most recently I have been growing plants from seed indoors which I like to share with friends.
2020 Biography:   Update since 2015 reunion:
I have been trying to reconnect with old friends and classmates.
I have been taking Road Scholar trips mostly hiking Appalachian Trail (day hikes) and other hiking adventures with some friends in Bloomington IN.
Involved in church singing in the choir and installed as a Deacon this year.
Taken an interest in Railroad history attended the Union Pacific Hist. Society convention / SPIKE150 event in Ogden UT May 2019.
Following a USS Archerfish ships reunion Sep.2018 took a cruise of the Mediterranean ending up in Barcelona Spain for a week before returning to USA. Following the MED. Trip I traveled to Port Canaveral for the opportunity to attend the Commissioning of the USS INDIANA a new fast attack submarine.
Still doing a lot of traveling: Military Space A (flights) HOPs most recently went to Key West for the weekend. Then in 2016 took a HOP to Japan spending about a month before returning to US. In 2015 following a USS Archerfish ships reunion in Groton CT took a HOP to Rota Spain then on to Ramstein Air Base Germany. While staying in a hotel in Landstuhl Germany I connected (on FB) with a lady from Manhattan MHS Class 69.
I stay connected with submarine shipmates from USS Archerfish and involvement with Submarine Veterans group in Indiana.

Spouse: Eric   Married: 1972
Children: David, Jonathan, Michael, Daniel, Stephen
Grandchildren: 3
2010 Biography: Eric and I have been in Columbus, OH, since we graduated from K-State, so Buckeye country is now almost as close to our hearts as Wildcat country. Last summer 3 of our sons moved out of state, so for the first time we aren't all concentrated in Ohio. One of our sons, Jonathan, is currently serving in Afghanistan as a surgeon for the Marines - he'll be there to the end of the year and is stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. Our son, Daniel, is in the D.C. area and youngest son, Stephen, is starting his 2nd year at U.Va. medical school, so we've been getting in a bit more traveling to see them. David & family and Michael are still nearby.
Eric is now a V.P. for his engineering company and has been helping them diversify a bit as the economy has slowed building projects. I am still working at Ohio State in the School of Music as an accompanist/vocal coach and thoroughly enjoying working with many talented singers. College students help keep you young, at least in your thinking!!!!
Our favorite pasttimes are bike riding, hiking, and occasional travels. We got to take our first-ever trip to Europe last fall and spent 15 days wandering around Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We rented a car for travel flexibility and so Eric could speed along the Autobahn. Can't wait to go back!
We thank God for our health, for blessing us with a family of five great sons and the three most precious grandchildren on earth. (It's really true - you should meet them and you'd agree!) We hope we'll get to catch up with many of you at the upcoming reunion.

Ron Linenberger
Wichita, KS
Spouse: Terry   Married: 1983
Children: Jason, Kelly
2005 Biography: After graduation I enlisted in the Navy for four years. Attended KSU briefly in 1975. Salesman 1974 to 1980 in Wamego, KS, Pittsburg, KS, and K.C., MO. In 1981 I took a management position with Howard Johnsons where they transferred me to Wichita, KS. I spent any leisure time I had playing darts back then. I met my present wife at a club called Dart Palace in May 1981. I attended WSU (Wichita State University) in 1982/83 after leaving Howard Johnsons. I got a scholarship as a walk on in bowling with the second highest average on the team and we won the national championships that year. Being 33 years old I thought I would have a longer career in darts. I worked in aircraft and other jobs in Wichita until 1991. I had started selling dart supplies locally and at tournaments throughout the continental US in 1985. By 1991 it was going well enough I gave up my other jobs. I also was playing professionally then and ranked #1 in Kansas from 1990 to 1992 and #23 nationally according to Bullshooter Magazine. I owned and operated a dart store and club in Wichita until May of 2002. I decided to close the operation for personal reasons. I have been working for a friend of mine the last couple of years framing houses and have recently given that up for health reasons. I'll be job hunting as soon as I'm done with this brief biography. My wife is a registered nurse at Healthsouth in Wichita. My daughter is a full time student at Wichita State planning to major in Communications/Advertising. She is about to start her third semester and has a scholarship in rowing. My son Jason from my first marriage is 28 and lives outside of Dallas, TX. He has a computer science degree from Kansas State and enjoys playing volleyball.

I don't miss it one little bit, even though I liked my practice area, my clients, and most of my partners. I was ready to leave. Now I'm busy every day with things I like to do, like write, read, walk, spend time with friends, volunteer for a couple of non-profits, and love my family to pieces. My husband, also an attorney, is happily retired as well.
We're still living in the suburbs of New York City and enjoying it. It's a beautiful area, with distinct seasons and the opportunity to take advantage of NYC when we want.
No grandchildren yet, but our daughter and daughter-in-law are in their prime child-bearing years, so hope lives. By the next reunion, we may have two or three!
We still travel a lot, all over the place, most recently in Merida and Oaxaca, Mexico, for January, February and March. Relished the toasty sunshine with clear blue skies. Wonderful place to visit. In our sights are the Canary Islands, Finland, Alaska, and Las Vegas. My one indulgence (other than good food).
Here's hoping some of you might remember me and, tougher, recognize me. At any rate, I'll join you. Cheers!
